Summary: Lizzie McGuire, one of cable's most popular young adult TV series comes to DVD in this 22 episode collection. For those of you not familiar with the show, Lizzie McGuire, played by Hilary Duff, is the title character in this Disney Channel series that plays out something like an Ally McBeal for the "tweenage" crowd. Lizzy, an eccentric yet lovable pre-teen experiences all of the craziness that Middle School has to offer with a colorful cartoon alter-ego occasionally appearing and offering glimpses into her thoughts.

Review: Each thirty minute episode is fairly standard sitcom fare, but what separates it from similar TV shows is its colorful characters. Everyone from her lovable best friends Miranda and Gordo to her zany brother Matt and quirky parents add a vibrancy that brings this show to life. Although I'm hardly in the target demographic for this show, I found it a fun diversion and its easy to see why its positive messages of friendship and teamwork make it such a hit with the "tween" crowd.

DVD bonus features: The set features audio commentary by four cast members on three of the episodes. While it might be interesting for some viewers to hear some behind the scenes tid-bits about the show, the commentaries, on the whole, were not particularly interesting and its doubtful that many people will listen to them. The other bonus features include a brief behind the scenes documentary on the show, and featurettes about the make-up and clothing styles of the characters. Conspicuously absent from the extras was any material featuring Hilary Duff. It was odd that the bit about "Getting the Lizzie Look" featured Ashlie Brillault, who plays Lizzie's bratty nemesis Kate, and not Lizzie herself. Its not a major gripe, but it is noticeable.

Conclusion: The Lizzie McGuire Box Set Volume 1 contains 22 entertaining and humorous episodes of this deservingly popular Disney Channel series that launched Hilary Duff to stardom. While the extras and commentaries were a bit lacking, there is still plenty to enjoy about this set that will keep old fans of the show and newcomers alike very happy.
